About Us / Our Story
This is our story of helping the needy
“Richmond College – Group of 97 Colombo Association is a network of alumni from Richmond College Galle 97 A/L batch, based in Colombo and surrounding areas. Our mission is to foster unity among expatriates and support the community through CSR projects.
Our Story
Unity in Purpose. Strength in Action. Commitment to the Future.
.
On 2nd September 2023, a collective of 1997 A/L alumni of Richmond College, Galle, residing in Colombo and its surrounding suburbs, came together at the Sri Lanka Air Force Base, Ratmalana with a shared purpose:
to unite as expatriates and professionals and to serve communities across Sri Lanka through meaningful and sustainable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, with a special focus on future generations.
This initiative was proposed and led by Wing Commander Viraj Weeraman (Retd.), a decorated Mi-24 combat helicopter pilot of the Sri Lanka Air Force, whose service to the nation extended beyond active duty into community engagement during some of the country’s most decisive periods. His leadership and vision laid the foundation for what would become a collective movement driven by discipline, service, and compassion.
Our Roots
As proud products of Richmond College, Galle, an institution with over 150 years of rich educational heritage, we were shaped by strong traditions, structured education, and unwavering discipline. These values instilled in us a deep sense of responsibility—one that extends far beyond personal and professional success.
While our 97 A/L alumni group based in Galle continues to actively support our alma mater, we recognized a growing opportunity to expand our impact. This led to the formation of the Richmond College Group of 97 – Colombo Association, bringing together alumni residing in Colombo and nearby suburbs to channel their professional expertise, personal networks, and collective resources toward community development initiatives.
Our association comprises high-profile professionals from both the public and private sectors, individuals with the capability and reach to ensure that support, care, and resources reach even the most remote and overlooked communities.
Our Vision
Through unity, compassion, and action, we connect people with opportunities to make a lasting difference.
We believe that real change begins when people come together with a shared purpose—transforming goodwill into tangible outcomes that uplift lives and empower futures.
Our Journey in Action
Sathkara – 2024 | A Helping Hand to Thalapalakanda Junior School, Deniyaya
With a clear vision and mission, we proudly launched our inaugural CSR project, Sathkara – 2024, focused on supporting Thalapalakanda Junior School in Deniyaya, a remote rural area approximately 150 kilometers from Colombo in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province.
This comprehensive educational support initiative aimed to enhance the learning environment and improve educational opportunities for over 120 students. The total project value exceeded LKR 800,000, made possible through the collective efforts of 40+ members and partners, both locally and overseas.
We are grateful for the invaluable contributions of our project partners, including:
Browns Hotels & Resorts, Abans Group, FlyAds, and ESOFT International College, whose support played a vital role in the success of this landmark initiative.
